AND EXECUTE

SILAS AND AMBER lurked through the darkness and regrouped by a mailbox across the street, watching the dimly lit house from a distance. Guards had swarmed the house like mosquitoes to an open flame. A dozen in sight. Half at various entrances of the house and half surrounding the garage.

“That’s not good for Laney and Marsh,” Amber said. She checked her wristwatch. “Just over fifteen minutes. They were probably waiting for us when the guns went off.”

“And Joe’s in there with them,” Silas said.

“We drew them in with a gunshot. We can do the same to draw them out.” She pulled out her gun. “I’ll run down the street and fire off a few shots. That should get their attention.”

“But then they’ll be after you.”

“Don’t worry about me. I can handle myself. Your job is to find Laney and Marsh and bust out with that car. I’ll wait for you down the street. Pick me up, and then we’re home free.”

“We shouldn’t split up again.”

“It’s not ideal, but we have no other choice. We need a distraction, and a gun is the best we have.”

“Or something that sounds like a gun,” Silas said, digging through his bag.

“What are you talking about?”

“All we need is a delayed loud noise.”

“What, do you have a remote mine in there or something?”

“Not quite,” he said, pulling out a water bottle. “Have you ever heard of an MRE?”

Amber cocked her head to the side. “No. What’s an MRE?”

Silas placed the water bottle down and continued to dig through his bag. “It stands for Meal, Ready-to-Eat. It’s a meal specifically made for military use. They’re compact, lightweight, and long-lasting.”

“Okay,” Amber said, more perplexed than before. “How does that help us, exactly?”

Silas pulled out one of the boxes and held it up to show her. “We found these a while back. Of course, I don’t have to eat, but Deacon was pretty excited to have a hot meal.”

“Hot meal? It just looks like a normal box of food to me.”

“Yes, it does, but there’s more to it. Add a little water, and a chemical reaction heats up the food.” He turned the box to show her the front. “This one is chicken fajita.”

“So, we can heat up food. What’s the big deal?”

“Let me finish. When we found these, we learned two things. First, they taste pretty bad. I think Deacon’s exact words were vomit in a box. He refuses to eat them. I just keep them for emergencies.”

“I get it, man. We have a bunch of barf-flavored food. Get to the point.”

“The second thing we learned, thanks to our own carelessness, is that the chemical reaction can build quite a bit of pressure. Contain that pressure in something like a bear canister, or anything airtight,” he picked up the water bottle, “and it creates a pretty loud noise.”

Amber’s eyes widened. “You don’t say. And it sounds like a gunshot?”

“Almost identical.”

“I got to say, simulated or not, you’re one intelligent dude.” She grabbed the MRE from Silas and flipped it over to read the instructions.
